Australian COVID-19 death toll rises to 11 as Victoria reports first fatalities

Victoria’s Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton has revealed that two men being treated for COVID-19 died overnight, becoming the state’s first coronavirus fatalities and bringing the national total to 11.

“They’re our first deaths,” he said.

He said the number of new confirmed cases had declined for the past two days in Victoria.

“That wasn’t entirely unexpected,” Professor Sutton said.

“I think I said [previously] the numbers of travellers returning has fallen away very sharply and because a lot of our cases were imported cases from travellers, that this might happen.
